The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) is an intensive, specialized program demanding higher academic achievement than a standard bachelor's degree. It provides diverse Arts disciplines spanning humanities, social sciences, and languages while strengthening students' research capabilities, critical analysis, and creative thinking. The program develops innovative problem-solving approaches and allows specialization in either one (pure honours) or two (combined honours) study areas.
This additional year following a three-year Bachelor of Arts prepares students for graduate research programs (PhD in Arts or Research Masters). Many undergraduate degrees include an honours pathway, which enhances research methods, analytical reasoning, communication abilities, and independent project experience. Completing honours may shorten some University of Melbourne Masters programs by up to one year.
As a global language spoken by 140+ million people and a UN official language, Russian opens career opportunities in international relations, business, science, and arts. The Russian Studies curriculum trains students to analyze diverse Russian-language materials (written and spoken) and present findings in various formats. Language courses progress sequentially from Russian 1 to 6, with placement determined by proficiency tests or prerequisites. Students typically follow this sequence, though mid-year entry into even-numbered courses is possible with proper qualifications and program approval. The Russian Studies program may authorize accelerated progression in certain cases.
