Gain profound insights into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and knowledge systems by exploring concepts and approaches from diverse fields such as history, anthropology, sociology, literature, linguistics, film studies, and health research. Indigenous Studies fosters critical engagement between these academic disciplines and both traditional and modern Indigenous perspectives, while examining the social and political impacts of colonization and decolonization.
Our curriculum aligns with current national and global developments in Indigenous Studies, amplifying the diverse viewpoints and priorities of Indigenous communities. You'll analyze and debate crucial topics affecting Indigenous populations in Australia and worldwide, including language preservation, groundbreaking Indigenous cinema and literature, ongoing health initiatives, and the broader struggle for self-determination and equity.
Delivered by a combination of Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars from various university departments alongside community specialists, Indigenous Studies courses are administered through the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and open to all enrolled students.
