This program provides a genuinely global outlook, immersing students in two distinct cultures (spending one full year in Australia and another in China). It merges Monash University's Master of International Relations with Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Master of Arts in Chinese Politics and Economy. By investigating the security, ethical, legal, and economic facets of international relations, students will develop the ability to critically analyze global justice issues, conflicts, peace efforts, social movements, and international relations. The curriculum covers crucial topics including foreign policy, world order, crisis resolution, terrorism, as well as gender studies, development, migration, and governance in global politics. With four specialization options—general international relations studies, governance and security, political violence and counter-terrorism, and international diplomacy and trade—the Master of International Relations portion of this dual degree equips students to navigate the intricacies of global political and economic systems. Students will cultivate analytical frameworks to comprehend both broad perspectives and specific details of complex issues while gaining foundational knowledge of major debates, historical events, and political structures. The Shanghai-based year focuses on Chinese government systems, political structures, and foreign policy, supplemented by cultural studies to enhance regional expertise. The program concludes with a thesis project. Taught by renowned scholars with extensive professional networks, students engage with cutting-edge developments in international relations. Alumni have pursued diverse careers with organizations like the United Nations, Australian Government, and NGOs including the International Red Cross.
