Sociology in Social Work Practice
This module introduces core sociological principles and frameworks and their application to social work. Students will employ analytical skills to examine societal challenges and their effects on clients. The curriculum covers foundational sociological thinkers and their influence on societal comprehension. Key themes include social hierarchy, encompassing class, gender, race, family structures, youth, and employment. The course investigates critical topics like economic hardship, multiculturalism, criminal behavior, and social norms. Developing a 'sociological perspective' and its significance in reshaping our interpretation of social dynamics for professional practice is emphasized.
Psychological Foundations for Social Workers
This component offers an overview of psychological principles essential to social work. It highlights the relevance of developmental psychology in the field. Key areas include lifespan development, personality traits, emotional bonds; behavioral theories (including Pavlovian and Skinnerian approaches) cognitive processes; individual differences; group dynamics; drive; and psychological disorders.
Australian Social and Governmental Structures
This segment introduces learners to Australia's fundamental societal and governing systems. Although Australia emerged as a contemporary democracy at federation in 1901, it carries dual legacies of Indigenous governance and colonial occupation. The nation's institutions evolved from British legal and cultural foundations while incorporating elements from other democracies, notably the United States. The curriculum analyzes Australia's formal political framework, including constitutional law, legislative bodies, judicial systems, executive roles, and intergovernmental relations. Additionally, it explores vital social systems supporting community welfare - including schooling, healthcare, accommodation, welfare programs, vocational opportunities, and public safety measures.
Three-year Bachelor (AQF Level 7) degree
Applicants whose qualifying undergraduate degree studies were taken in a language other than English will be required to demonstrate English Language proficiency.
