This prestigious research-focused program in health and biomedical sciences offers students the chance to conduct independent investigative research under the guidance of School of Medicine faculty, complemented by specialized coursework in research methodology, communication, ethics, and data analysis. The program serves as an ideal foundation for progressing into PhD studies or careers demanding advanced subject expertise and research capabilities.
Research initiatives focus on understanding health and disease mechanisms, ranging from fundamental genetic research and molecular studies to functional genomics, preclinical trials, and clinical/epidemiological investigations. Areas of study encompass immunology, infectious diseases, developmental biology, exercise physiology, metabolic processes, musculoskeletal systems, blood disorders, oncology, neurological sciences, psychiatric molecular biology, and nanomedicine. Additional research opportunities exist in rural medicine, primary care, chronic illness treatment, population health, medical training, disease patterns, agricultural health, diagnostic imaging, surgical techniques, and vision science.
To be considered for selection into this degree you are required to meet at least one of the following criteria:
completion of a masters degree with a minimum credit average (65% or equivalent) in the same discipline as the proposed research thesis
completion of a bachelor degree with a distinction average (70% and above) for third year units or equivalent in the same discipline as the proposed research thesis
completion of the pre-clinical component of the Doctor of Medicine (or equivalent degree) at the postgraduate level.
