Our physics research primarily explores optical physics applications, physical sensing techniques, instrumentation development, measurement technologies, optical imaging systems, surface and thin film physics, astronomical studies, photonics, photovoltaic systems, and microelectronics.

For instance, our physics team works alongside industry and government researchers to implement optical and acoustic sensing methods for various applications. These include analyzing aircraft structures, monitoring wave energy devices, measuring water acidity in desalination processes, studying insect acoustic signatures, and examining radiation effects in fiber optic systems. We develop specific postgraduate research projects in these areas through collaboration with our postgraduate coordinator or potential supervisors. ECU's physics research emphasizes: Fiber optic and acoustic sensing technologies for diverse uses such as structural integrity assessment, agricultural surveillance, pipeline monitoring in energy sectors, and radiation sensing. Acoustic tracking of insect populations for agricultural management. Low-coherence interferometry for medical and industrial optical imaging. Photovoltaic materials and device architectures, including optical power transmission systems. Physics education programs tailored for both physics and engineering students.
