The Master of Philosophy program is designed to extend knowledge beyond undergraduate honors or postgraduate diploma qualifications, with a research thesis as its final outcome. After earning this research-based master's degree, graduates can seek admission to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program.
Research-focused advanced degrees distinguish themselves from other postgraduate programs by requiring that research constitutes at least two-thirds of the curriculum. While some coursework may be necessary, the primary focus involves developing a thesis under the direction of a primary supervisor and supporting advisors. Examiners must judge the thesis to make a significant original contribution to any field, whether through new discoveries, theoretical developments, or creative reinterpretations of existing knowledge. Additionally, the work must showcase the candidate's ability to independently plan, execute, and conclude research projects.
