The Master of Philosophy program is designed to extend academic understanding beyond undergraduate honors or postgraduate diplomas, with a primary focus on producing a research thesis. After earning this research-based master's degree, graduates can seek admission to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program.

Unlike other postgraduate qualifications, a research higher degree requires that over two-thirds of the program involve investigative work. While some coursework may be included, the core component involves developing a thesis under the mentorship of a primary supervisor and additional advisors. Examiners must judge the thesis to make a significant original contribution to its field, whether through new discoveries, theoretical advancements, or fresh interpretations of existing knowledge.
