ANU's graduate linguistics program leverages the knowledge of the most extensive group of language experts in the southern hemisphere. For over two decades, ANU's linguistic research has specialized in analyzing and comparing languages from Australia, Papua-New Guinea, Pacific Islands, Indonesia, and China. Our curriculum covers both field and theoretical linguistics, with research spanning more languages than any other Australian institution.
Linguistics examines human language scientifically, exploring it as a universal human capability and communication tool. Our graduate courses accommodate students specializing in specific languages or language groups, those aiming to advance understanding of language itself, or individuals interested in meaning, communication, and cognitive science.
ANU boasts a dynamic Applied Linguistics initiative. While many programs concentrate mainly on language education, particularly through TESOL, our approach extends beyond these conventional boundaries.
This program collaborates closely with Linguistics, Translation, European language departments (French, Spanish, German, Italian), and the College of Asia & the Pacific's Applied Linguistics programs (Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Indonesian). Consequently, ANU's Applied Linguistics students benefit from diverse scholarly perspectives across interconnected disciplines.
