Northeast Asia holds immense political, economic, and cultural importance on the global stage. Home to the world's second and third largest economies, this vibrant region is undergoing significant changes. Given how political, economic, and cultural shifts in Northeast Asia impact the world, studying its history becomes crucial. The Northeast Asian Studies program provides comprehensive courses exploring the politics, histories, cultures, and societies of China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia, and the Russian Far East. Majoring in Northeast Asian Studies equips students with a strong foundation to pursue both broad and specialized interests in a region critical to Australia and the international community.
The Northeast Asian studies major complements Chinese, Korean, and Japanese language majors as well as Mongolian and Russian language minors, though proficiency in these languages is not mandatory for courses within this major.
