The Master of Musical Arts is awarded to students who complete a rigorous two-year program (minimum 16 credits per semester). Candidates need a Master of Music degree or equivalent qualification in their chosen specialization. This intensive program focuses on the student's primary discipline—performance, conducting, or composition—complemented by coursework in music theory and history. Each student's curriculum is tailored in consultation with their department and academic advisor. Graduates of the School of Music's M.M. program typically finish in one year. Individuals with a D.M.A. degree or currently pursuing one cannot apply. The curriculum includes diverse repertoire study through private instruction and weekly seminars, along with frequent performance opportunities in orchestral, chamber, and contemporary music settings.
