The History of Science and Medicine Program (HSHM) operates as a partially independent graduate track within Yale's History Department. Students in HSHM earn History degrees with a specialization in Science and Medicine history while maintaining full departmental membership. While most participants pursue PhDs—often alongside MD or JD studies at Yale or other institutions—a one-year MA option exists. HSHM enables scholars to investigate diverse subjects across science, medicine, technology history, and related studies. Learning occurs through intimate seminar settings, with continuous faculty mentorship available. The curriculum emphasizes career growth in teaching, research, publishing, and public speaking, while Yale provides supplementary avenues to develop expertise in areas like exhibition design, digital humanities, and policy analysis.
Applicants must have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale.
