Yale's Film and Media Studies PhD program rapidly gained the global recognition it maintains today. Expanding upon a strong undergraduate program led by experienced faculty, the graduate initiative drew new professors excited to contribute to its development. Applicants have consistently demonstrated exceptional qualifications, with most accepted candidates opting to enroll here. To date, fifty students have either completed or are currently pursuing their degrees. Graduates now hold positions at prestigious institutions, including universities with prominent graduate programs, and some have published their revised dissertations with leading academic presses. This scholarly achievement stems partly from Yale's extraordinary resources. Dedicated librarians and curators actively acquire and manage vast collections across campus libraries - Sterling Memorial, Haas Art History, and particularly the Beinecke Rare Book Library, which preserves archives of numerous filmmakers and artists. Students benefit from close ties to two world-class museums: the Yale University Art Gallery and the British Art Center (both housed in Louis Kahn-designed buildings). The Whitney Humanities Center's Film Study Center, our neighbor, provides access to over 20,000 video titles and recently joined FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives) following the appointment of a full-time archivist for its expanding film collection. A skilled projectionist conducts hundreds of annual screenings in two specialized venues (our building's 250-seat auditorium and a 40-seat screening room on York Street), both equipped for 35mm, 16mm, and nearly all digital formats, with 4K and 2K projection becoming standard.
Applicants must have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale.
