This program provides a broad understanding of classical art's evolution from the Bronze Age through Late Antiquity, while allowing focused study on a specific era and region. It incorporates field archaeology's contributions and includes visits to significant historical sites. Participants must complete fourteen term courses, including four seminars, with flexibility to align with personal interests. Proficiency in Greek and Latin is required, typically demonstrated by passing advanced courses in both languages. Additionally, students must pass departmental exams in German and another modern language (commonly Italian or French) by their second year. PhD candidacy is granted after successfully completing written and oral comprehensive exams in classical art and archaeology, along with approval of the dissertation proposal.
Applicants must have completed your undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) or will have completed it prior to your intended matriculation date at Yale.
