The vocal program specializing in early music caters to singers passionate about historical music, sacred works, art songs, modern compositions, and small choral ensembles. Participants receive personalized voice instruction along with focused coaching in art song and oratorio repertoire, complemented by weekly workshops covering performance techniques, pronunciation, and artistic expression. Students gain exposure to masterclasses led by distinguished visiting performers. While sharing diction, movement, and repertoire courses with opera students, early music vocalists also participate in the Yale Institute of Sacred Music's Wednesday Colloquium alongside peers from related programs. Every early music singer performs with Yale Schola Cantorum, the university's premier vocal ensemble that hones group performance skills under principal conductor David Hill and guest conductor Masaaki Suzuki. This ensemble provides extensive performance avenues, from solo parts in significant compositions to touring and recording initiatives that offer crucial career development.
