The rigorous Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) program features a two-year on-campus residency followed by three years of professional career development. Yale School of Music horn students receive private instruction and attend weekly studio seminars covering specialized topics like orchestral excerpts, études, or song arrangements. The curriculum emphasizes mastering diverse musical styles, from Baroque to contemporary works. Beyond solo performance, horn players engage in chamber music—a cornerstone of Yale's musical training—and perform with ensembles including the New Music New Haven series and the Yale Philharmonia orchestra. These experiences allow students to explore varied repertoire under the direction of principal conductor Peter Oundjian and visiting maestros. Leigh Hall's third-floor horn studio provides a dedicated space for practice, rehearsal, and research, equipped with four period instruments (two Classical and two Baroque horns) plus a triple horn for student use.
