The vocal program specializing in early music caters to singers passionate about historical compositions, sacred choral works, lyrical pieces, modern vocal music, and small ensemble performances. Participants in this program benefit from individualized voice instruction and focused training in song repertoire and sacred music, while also engaging in weekly workshops covering performance techniques, pronunciation, and artistic expression. Students frequently interact with distinguished visiting musicians through specialized master classes. While sharing certain courses like language pronunciation, physical expression, and vocal literature with opera students, early music vocalists join the Yale Institute of Sacred Music's Wednesday colloquium alongside peers from related disciplines. Every participant performs with Yale Schola Cantorum, the university's premier vocal ensemble that hones group performance skills under the direction of David Hill as chief conductor and Masaaki Suzuki as visiting conductor. This ensemble provides extensive performance avenues, from solo parts in significant compositions to touring and recording initiatives that offer crucial career development opportunities.
