The Bachelor of Arts/Master of Music dual-degree program caters to exceptionally skilled instrumental performers seeking both a liberal arts education and advanced musical training. Applicants must gain admission to Yale College and pass a separate audition with the School of Music, which can occur either before starting at Yale or during their third undergraduate year. Typically, students fulfill their Bachelor of Arts requirements in the initial four years, then complete the Master of Music degree in their fifth year. By graduation, all B.A./M.M. participants must demonstrate proficiency in Analysis and Musicianship, Music History (through exams or coursework), keyboard skills, and non-performance course distribution. To track progress, students take placement exams during their fourth year and meet regularly with the deputy dean for academics and academic studies coordinator for guidance on performance commitments and academic planning.
