The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers education in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian languages, literatures, and cultural studies. Portuguese course details and major requirements can be found under the Portuguese section, with faculty listings for these courses provided in the roster. The Spanish major presents a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum covering linguistic studies, literary works, and cultural traditions across 20 Spanish-speaking nations spanning Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. As the second most common language in the U.S., one of the world's top three spoken languages, and an official U.N. diplomatic language, Spanish holds global significance. Our Spanish program enables students to develop advanced language skills while gaining deep understanding of cultural and literary subjects. This interdisciplinary major examines literature, history, philosophy, arts, and cultural analysis, serving as strong preparation for professional paths in law, international relations, healthcare, commerce, creative fields, scholarship, media, and teaching.
