The Jewish Studies program equips students with comprehensive understanding of Jewish history, religion, literature, philosophy, languages, and political systems. This field examines Jewish communities, sacred texts, belief systems, physical artifacts, and organizational structures through a comparative lens, exploring their interactions with surrounding societies, cultures, and intellectual movements across different historical periods. As an interdisciplinary field, Jewish Studies utilizes diverse analytical approaches including historical, literary, political, sociological, and philosophical methodologies. The Jewish Studies major—particularly when paired with a second major in Economics, Political Science, Comparative Literature, English, Philosophy, or History—provides a well-rounded liberal arts education while offering focused study of Jewish cultural and religious development from ancient to modern eras. Key historical phases covered include the Persian and Hellenistic eras, classical antiquity, the Middle Ages, early modern period, and contemporary times.
