Environmental Studies provides a multidisciplinary approach to exploring humanity's interaction with the environment. The program fosters cross-disciplinary learning across three key areas: (1) social sciences encompassing anthropology, political science, legal studies, economics, and ethics; (2) humanities covering history, literary arts, religious studies, and creative disciplines; and (3) natural sciences including biological sciences, ecological studies, public health, earth sciences, and chemistry. With guidance from faculty advisors and undergraduate program directors (DUS), students tackle critical environmental challenges like energy transitions and climate crisis, sustainable food systems, urban sustainability, wildlife conservation, public health, responsible resource management, environmental justice, economic systems, and policy frameworks. The department offers both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree options. The B.A. track caters to students emphasizing social sciences and humanities, while the B.S. program is designed for those specializing in natural sciences, particularly environmental health, medical applications, ecosystem science, and climate solutions. Both degree paths conclude with a capstone senior thesis, often building upon independent summer research projects.
