Art majors cultivate both critical and hands-on expertise in visual arts and design through an immersive studio program that seamlessly integrates creative practice with analytical thought and art historical context. They master core visual art principles applicable across diverse media and fields, connect artistic creation to art history and theory, and develop proficiency in at least one artistic discipline through active exploration and investigation. Concentrations may include painting/printmaking, sculpture, graphic design, photography, or filmmaking, with opportunities for interdisciplinary work. Students learn to situate their creations within broader contemporary art landscapes and diverse cultural frameworks worldwide. This artistic education serves as a vital component of liberal arts, benefiting both aspiring artists and those pursuing other disciplines. Central to artistic growth is the critique process, conducted through group sessions and individual faculty consultations. Through dedicated practice and constructive evaluation, students refine their unique critical perspective. The program provides access to graduate-level resources, including lectures, critiques, and exhibitions featuring visiting artists from varied backgrounds within the School of Art community.
