This cross-disciplinary program is overseen by the University's Council on Archaeological Studies. Questions regarding the major can be directed to council chair Richard Burger at the Department of Anthropology, 10 Sachem St., or to the undergraduate studies director (DUS). The Archaeological Studies major offers an interdepartmental curriculum exploring prehistoric, ancient, medieval, and other civilizations across the globe, while equipping students with analytical methods for archaeological research. The program aims to familiarize students with diverse archaeological approaches: anthropological, historical, art historical, and scientific. Key focus areas include (1) investigating major transitions like the emergence of agriculture, urban centers, states, and early empires, and (2) examining material culture, art, and architecture from ancient through medieval periods, covering topics such as cultural symbolism, art-society relationships, early writing systems, and American historical archaeology.
