The School of Music provides three NASM-accredited graduate programs: the Master of Music in Music Education and the Master of Music in Performance. The Music Education master's is a career-focused program catering to educators from elementary schools through college. While all coursework applies to terminal degrees, it also benefits those pursuing doctoral studies. Flexible program tracks let students tailor their studies to align with their career objectives, educational background, and professional experience. Students pursuing the Music Education master's can choose from three pathways: Thesis, Project, or Recital. Each track includes coursework in music education, history, theory, and performance opportunities. The Thesis path involves writing a thesis with faculty guidance, the Project option completes one major project with advisor supervision, while the Recital track combines a public performance with a scholarly paper.

Qualification Requirements

In addition to meeting the admission requirements of the Graduate School, applicants for admission to any of the three degree programs of the Graduate students in Music program (Master of Music in Music Education, Master of Music in Performance, or Master of Humanities with an emphasis in music) must present an undergraduate major in music from an accredited college or university with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in undergraduate course work in music. In addition to the application and transcripts sent to the School of Graduate Studies, the applicant may submit the following to the School of Music: resume, three recommendations from teachers, administrators, or colleagues, and other supporting material the applicant may deem appropriate.

In addition to the requirements in the preceding paragraph, applicants for the Master of Music in Performance program must complete a successful performance audition in the intended emphasis (Choral Conducting, Instrumental Conducting, Instrumental Performance, Piano Performance, or Vocal Performance), which places the student at the equivalence of an undergraduate senior recital in the intended emphasis area. Additional materials (portfolio, letters of recommendation, repertoire lists, etc.) appropriate to the specific emphasis may be required in each emphasis by the appropriate program specialist and applied committee.
You must submit an official transcript accompanied by a translation into English if needed. If your credentials cannot be evaluated by the Office of International Admissions, you are required to submit your academic credentials to an evaluation service and pay the cost of the evaluation.
If your native language is not English and you do not have a degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, you must have a minimum score on one of the following exams:
A score of 79/120 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (T.O.E.F.L.)
A band 6 or higher through the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
A score of 57 or higher on the Pearson PTE
Students who show proof of successful completion of an Intensive English Program from an accredited Institution or program accepted by international admissions are exempt from the requirement to take an approved English Proficiency exam.
Several departments or programs have set higher requirements for English proficiency. Visit the graduate programs page for more information.
You may be required by your academic advisors to take an English writing placement test. If you do not pass this test, you may be required to take more on-campus classes to improve your English. If you have earned a degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, you are exempted from the TOEFL requirement.
