Earning an undergraduate English certificate enhances career prospects by supplementing professional expertise with strong communication, analytical, and public speaking abilities while providing cultural awareness to connect with diverse individuals. Humanities education also offers personal enrichment. For those passionate about literature, composition, or cross-cultural experiences, consult your academic advisor or reach out to the English Language and Literatures Department to explore our minor and certificate offerings. TESOL-focused students, including those pursuing certificate programs, TEFL certification, or the TESOL MA degree, must fulfill a semester-long internship requirement. Many interns collaborate with faculty in Wright State's LEAP intensive English program, while others may work with qualified professors at external institutions. All internship mentors must hold a Master of Arts in TESOL.

Qualification Requirements

A grade of B or better in an upper-division introductory linguistics course taken within the last five years is the only prerequisite to the certificate program. Students may fulfill this requirement by taking either ENG 4710 or ENG 6710 (Introduction to Linguistics) before beginning the certificate program or during the Fall Semester in conjunction with Fall Semester courses.

To be admitted into the program, nonnative speakers of English must obtain a TOEFL IBT score of 100, IELTS 7.5, PTE 68 or students who show proof of successful completion of an Intensive English Program from an accredited Institution or program accepted by international admissions are exempt from the requirement to take an approved English Proficiency exam. Students will be tested upon beginning the program and may be required to take ESL courses to improve their English skills.
All students must truthfully report their full academic education history, past and current. Failure to do so will result in the delay of processing the application.
You must have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and a minimum score of English proficiency from one of these tests:
