The School of Social Sciences and International Studies provides both major and minor programs in French studies. The French major involves an in-depth exploration of the language, historical background, cultural traditions, literary works, and cinema from Francophone regions. Beginning to advanced courses progressively enhance students' verbal, written, and cultural abilities, with instruction conducted entirely in French. Learners gain sophisticated insights into the development of French culture across global Francophone communities, spanning Europe, Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, Asia, and Oceania. Structured courses in composition and dialogue prepare students with superior linguistic capabilities applicable to scholarly, social, and career environments. International study opportunities are strongly recommended, with many majors completing requirements through short-term exchanges, faculty-directed overseas programs, or approved partner institutions. Faculty members organize intensive study tours to Paris, Normandy, Bordeaux, and Quebec through the Ambassador program. Preferred extended study options through USAC, ISA, the Ohio Consortium, and direct exchanges include locations in France (Angers, Lyon, Pau, Strasbourg), Canada, and Luxembourg. Foreign language acquisition fosters innovative thinking by introducing alternative worldviews and enhancing cultural awareness - valuable competencies in today's interconnected professional landscape. The French major proves especially beneficial for those pursuing international careers in arts, hospitality, commerce, education, writing, global development, public service, legal fields, media, linguistics, healthcare, film, philosophy, psychology, and language services.
