The field of crime and justice studies (CJS) represents a diverse, interdisciplinary academic domain. This discipline synthesizes research from multiple areas including sociology, legal studies, history, psychology, and political science. It involves examining institutions at all government levels that work to comprehend, regulate, and prevent criminal activity. Primary organizations handling these functions include police departments, court systems, and correctional facilities. At its core, CJS explores issues of societal justice - matters pertaining to equity, impartiality, liberty, safety, and community stability. For those curious about crime's origins, societal reactions, and impacts on both individuals and communities, this program offers valuable insights. As a liberal arts degree, crime and justice studies emphasizes developing comprehensive, critically aware, and evidence-based perspectives. Though hands-on training forms an essential part of our coursework, our broader goal is to cultivate graduates who become pioneering professionals, applying rigorous analysis and scientific thinking in their careers. Career opportunities span numerous sectors such as municipal and national policing, offender supervision, various court systems, academic research, incarceration facilities, education, forensic science, and beyond. While CJS presents an intellectually stimulating major, it demands specific qualifications. Applicants should note that prior convictions or substance abuse issues may hinder employment prospects. Additionally, success in this field requires not just strong analytical capabilities but also emotional intelligence, professional boundaries, and above all, unwavering commitment to upholding human rights and individual worth.
