Launched in fall 1999, the Master of Music Jazz Studies program provides an immersive curriculum focusing on advanced small jazz ensembles, solo performance, and arranging/composition. Students can elevate their improvisation and instrumental/vocal abilities while accessing unparalleled primary source research and writing opportunities exclusive to the New York region. The program also emphasizes modern teaching methods for improvisation and arranging. Enhanced learning comes from exploring historical and theoretical contexts (covering both Western European traditions and jazz), graduate-level jazz research and writing, cutting-edge technological applications in jazz, and implementing these concepts in educational settings from colleges to public schools.

Undergraduate music degree or equivalent (cumulative grade-point average of 2.75 on a scale of 4.0)
Master of music applicants must be accepted by both the University and the Department of Music. Specific Department of Music requirements include:
Completed application
Two letters of recommendation
Audition via uploaded tracks
A portfolio must contain a minimum of three scores with recording (CD or tape).
One selection must feature a large ensemble.
If possible, a cross-representation of styles, tempos, and instrumentation should be included.
In addition to jazz pieces, works in other styles may be submitted. Please exclude extended improvisation sections.
