The Master of Arts in Teaching for Secondary Education (K-12) offers specialization in various subjects including Art, Biological Science, Chemistry, Chinese, Earth Science, English, French, Japanese, Music, Physical Science, Social Studies, and Spanish. This 30-credit, 15-month program provides graduate students with initial certification in their chosen field along with a Master of Arts in Teaching degree. Coursework commences in May during the first summer and concludes in August of the following summer. Students can opt for either the traditional or alternate pathway. The traditional route involves a year-long residency beginning in September, where teacher candidates spend three days weekly in local schools during fall and four days weekly in spring. Alternatively, the alternate route requires candidates to secure a certificate of eligibility (CE) for their desired subject area and secure employment as a teacher of record at a participating school. Classes are held on campus in the evenings and online. Candidates must showcase effective teaching, research, and professional conduct in line with COE, state, and national standards through video submissions, lesson plans, and a capstone research project. Action research projects are implemented during the second summer term. The curriculum emphasizes literacy and technology integration, with key evaluations including a teaching performance assessment, action research project, and edTPA.
