The Biology Department provides degree programs for students seeking a Bachelor of Science in Biology or a Biology minor. The BS in Biology curriculum establishes a solid foundation in core principles before progressing to specialized upper-level coursework. The program prioritizes practical learning through laboratory work and field studies. Biology majors can specialize in one of four tracks: general biology, pre-medical studies, organismal biology, or ecology.
Biology graduates often continue their education in medical, dental, or veterinary programs, or pursue graduate studies in specialized fields including animal physiology, molecular biology, plant sciences, biochemistry, genetics, behavioral genetics, ecology, microbiology, and neuroscience. Those entering the workforce directly can find positions as laboratory technicians or research assistants in pharmaceutical companies, healthcare facilities, government agencies, or environmental organizations. The program also prepares students for science teaching careers, with certification options available for elementary and secondary education.
The Biology Department features modern, well-equipped laboratories and research facilities that undergraduate students can utilize for coursework and independent projects. Students are actively encouraged to engage in faculty-supervised research, with dedicated lab spaces and recognition awards available for research participants. Additionally, the College of Science and Health's Research Center offers summer research funding opportunities for select upper-level undergraduates.
