To achieve its goal of equipping students with deep cultural understanding, the Department of Modern and Classical Languages focuses on two key areas: linguistic structure and literary interpretation. Language structure is taught through both comprehensive and detailed approaches. Immersive language acquisition is supported by contemporary teaching techniques, digital tools, and international study programs. For technical language study, the department offers comprehensive skills courses and numerous linguistics classes. Analyzing literature helps students appreciate how a culture's ideals are artistically expressed at their finest.
Students also receive training in historical contexts, cultural studies, and critical theory, preparing them to engage with a culture's intellectual traditions. The program develops teaching competencies for aspiring language educators, empowering them to guide secondary students in beginning their world language journeys.
This program culminates in a BA degree without teaching credentials. Those seeking Washington state certification must fulfill additional requirements, including the teacher preparation program administered by the Department of Secondary Education.
