History explores humanity's past through artifacts, documents, and oral accounts, examining the rich tapestry of human existence across different eras and cultures. This field acknowledges both individual historical figures and broader societal patterns. As an academic pursuit, history demands thoughtful reflection on the past, skilled analysis of evidence, and the capacity to trace and interpret patterns of continuity and transformation. Studying history is fundamental for engaged citizenship. Our History curriculum helps students examine the influences that have molded global civilizations. Learners develop skills to evaluate historical evidence and navigate competing narratives about bygone eras. History courses foster critical engagement with primary sources and historical scholarship. Students master the art of synthesizing diverse evidence to construct compelling arguments while understanding how history has been employed to serve various agendas. Through respectful discourse, history students gain perspective and assess the impact of past events and ideas.

Our department emphasizes active historical practice over rote memorization. We offer courses covering U.S., European, Latin American, African, Asian, and global histories. Upper-level courses examine these regions through specialized historical lenses including social class, gender, race, cultural studies, religion, arts, political systems, technological developments, military conflicts, and other frameworks.
