The Master of Arts in English program provides comprehensive study in literature, literary history, linguistics, critical theory, and professional English studies. This 33-credit degree mandates enrollment in ENGL 6150: Literary Theory and ENGL 6900: Scholarship and Writing in the Profession, with the remaining 27 credits being electives. ENGL 6150 explores diverse theoretical approaches, while ENGL 6900 functions as a culminating experience where students refine seminar papers into publishable-quality articles. Notably, GRE scores are not required for admission.

This adaptable MA program prepares graduates for diverse career paths, including college-level English instruction. Our alumni have successfully gained admission to renowned doctoral programs at institutions such as the University of Florida, University of Washington, Michigan State University, Marquette University, Illinois State University, Southern Methodist University, Purdue University, and the University of Kentucky.

The Medieval Language and Literature concentration offers specialized study of medieval literary periods, also without GRE requirements. This 33-hour track requires ENGL 6150 (Literary Criticism), ENGL 6900 (Scholarship and Writing), ENGL 5300 (Medieval Literature), ENGL 5760 (Old Norse), and ENGL 6760 (Old English). Students complete their focus by selecting two additional medieval courses from various options, including advanced Norse or English studies. The remaining 12 credits can be fulfilled through any departmental offerings.

Qualification Requirements

As an applicant to the master’s degree program, you must present a 34-hour undergraduate major with a GPA of at least 3.0. At least 20 hours of your undergraduate major must be in literature, including 15 hours of literature coursework at the junior or senior level. If you have taken substantial English coursework but cannot meet the 20-hour literature course requirement, you may still apply for admission, but you may have to remedy any deficiencies through undergraduate or graduate level coursework.
