Western Michigan University's political science doctoral program focuses on three key areas: American politics, comparative politics, and political theory. The program intentionally admits a limited number of students annually to ensure small class sizes and foster closer faculty-student engagement.

Graduate students play a vital role in the department's academic community, collaborating with visiting experts, serving on committees, and assisting with undergraduate education. The Political Science Graduate Student Association organizes lectures and events to enrich the graduate learning experience. Professional growth is supported through mandatory teaching and research courses, workshops, and guidance from both faculty and experienced graduate students.

Diversity is a cornerstone of the department. Recent statistics show that 47% of graduate students were women, while 13% identified as minorities and 40% as international students from more than 30 nations spanning Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe over a five-year span.
