The craft beer industry has seen remarkable expansion over the past twenty years, contributing approximately $2 billion and creating numerous jobs to Michigan's economy. West Michigan has earned widespread recognition for its brewing excellence, with Kalamazoo emerging as an educational hub for this booming industry through the country's first higher education program focused on sustainable brewing practices.
Established in 2015 through a partnership between Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo Valley Community College, the Sustainable Brewing program provides flexible pathways to completion. This includes a 2+2 plan where students can first obtain an associate degree at KVCC before pursuing a bachelor's degree that blends brewing artistry, scientific principles, and business acumen with WMU's renowned sustainability expertise.

The Sustainable Brewing major offers two distinct specialization paths, both incorporating comprehensive education in sustainability practices, environmental science, and food/beverage systems.
Brewing trackThis science-intensive program was designed in collaboration with an advisory board featuring representatives from Michigan's premier breweries. Students gain in-depth knowledge through courses in chemistry, general biology, microbiology, and fermentation science, equipping them with advanced brewing science expertise.
Brewing Operations trackThis business-oriented curriculum emphasizes industry management, covering essential subjects like accounting, sales, marketing, and operational strategies. It prepares students for leadership roles as future brewery owners or industry executives.
A first-year applicant is a student who is applying for admission and who has not attempted or earned any college credit after graduating from high school/secondary school (or earned equivalent).
