Data science is a fast-growing field that blends statistical analysis with computational techniques. Its advancement stems from enhanced computing capabilities and the exponential growth of data generation across industries, research, and public sectors. The demand for big data expertise continues to climb, with future career opportunities for computer science and statistics graduates expected to heavily incorporate big data elements. Given the discipline's explosive growth, experts anticipate a deficit of approximately 190,000 qualified data scientists by 2018. Recognizing this critical gap, Western Michigan University introduced Michigan's inaugural Bachelor of Science in Data Science program in 2015.
