Western Michigan University launched its music therapy program in 1958, later expanding with an on-campus Music Therapy Clinic during the 1970s. Being among the country's earliest accredited music therapy programs, WMU provides education at both bachelor's and master's levels, along with an equivalency certificate for music graduates. The program holds full accreditation from both the National Association for Schools of Music (NASM) and the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA).
WMU's music therapy students can acquire hands-on experience at the University's Music Therapy Clinic within the Unified Clinic on the Kalamazoo campus, or through partnerships with over 30 medical, educational, and healthcare organizations in the Kalamazoo region. Additionally, students may participate in the Student Music Therapy Association, a registered WMU organization welcoming all undergraduate and graduate students.
A first-year applicant is a student who is applying for admission and who has not attempted or earned any college credit after graduating from high school/secondary school (or earned equivalent).
