Western Michigan University's music composition program maintains rigorous admission standards. Prospective students must pass the university's audition and evaluation process, conducted every November, January, and February. Applicants need prior composition background, which can be demonstrated through transfer credits from another accredited institution or by completing required composition courses at WMU. Music composition majors at WMU must showcase their skills through a senior recital featuring 30 minutes of original works developed during their studies and approved by the composition faculty.
A first-year applicant is a student who is applying for admission and who has not attempted or earned any college credit after graduating from high school/secondary school (or earned equivalent).
