The sociology program at Western Michigan University equips students with skills to critically examine society, its inhabitants, and social structures.
Sociology professionals explore various specialized domains. Some researchers investigate social systems like family dynamics, religious practices, healthcare systems, economic models, or political structures. Certain experts examine social deviance, systemic breakdowns, and societal conflicts. Another group analyzes social stratification - how different hierarchies emerge and affect society, particularly regarding racial, economic, gender, or age-related factors. Additional specialists focus on demographic trends and environmental relationships. WMU's sociology program is increasingly prioritizing global perspectives and intercultural studies.
A first-year applicant is a student who is applying for admission and who has not attempted or earned any college credit after graduating from high school/secondary school (or earned equivalent).
