Western Michigan University provides two German major pathways. The initial option is a Bachelor of Arts program in language, literature, and culture through the College of Arts and Sciences. The alternative is a similar language, literature, and culture track, but results in a teaching certification from the College of Education and Human Development.
Each program emphasizes German language proficiency and cultural understanding. Core classes span beginner to advanced German studies, cultural exploration, and literary analysis. Students collaborate with advisors to select complementary electives. While sharing foundational coursework, the education track includes specialized training for teaching German in secondary schools.
A first-year applicant is a student who is applying for admission and who has not attempted or earned any college credit after graduating from high school/secondary school (or earned equivalent).
