Western Michigan University provides two distinct paths for students pursuing a French major. The College of Arts and Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts program focused on language, literature, and culture, while the College of Education and Human Development provides a similar program tailored for teaching certification.
Both programs emphasize comprehensive French language and cultural studies. Core classes include beginner through advanced French language courses, studies of French/Francophone culture, literature, and linguistics. Students work with advisors to select complementary electives. The education track mirrors the arts curriculum while incorporating specialized training for teaching French in secondary schools.
WMU actively encourages French majors to participate in study abroad experiences, including university-sponsored programs in Besançon, Lyon (France), and Québec City.
The World Languages and Literatures Department hosts a weekly French Table discussion group facilitated by a native speaker, offering informal conversation practice and networking opportunities. Additionally, the student-run French Club organizes cultural events and activities throughout the academic year.
A first-year applicant is a student who is applying for admission and who has not attempted or earned any college credit after graduating from high school/secondary school (or earned equivalent).
