The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Alternative Teacher Licensure program spans two years as a residency. During this time, participants are employed by school districts under provisional teaching licenses, serving as instructors while completing coursework through the School of Education. Upon successful completion, candidates receive both a Professional Educator License and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree. Western Illinois University's School of Education currently provides this pathway for K-21 Special Education, Secondary Math, Secondary Science, Elementary Education, and Secondary English certification seekers.
