The discipline of economics encompasses a wide range of applications and opportunities. Our alumni pursue diverse careers in government, legal studies, education, and financial sectors including insurance and banking. At its core, economics represents the systematic study of choice and its implications. The curriculum teaches students to evaluate the trade-offs, advantages, and outcomes of various decisions. While commonly associated with market analysis, economists also examine factors influencing markets, such as crime patterns, poverty dynamics, legal frameworks, environmental policies, demographic trends, and political processes. West Virginia University provides two pathways for economics majors. Students can pursue either a Bachelor of Arts (BA) through the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences or a Bachelor of Science (BS) via the College of Business and Economics. The BS program mandates core economics courses (including Intermediate Microeconomic Theory, Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory, and American Economic History) along with specialized electives like International Economics, Economic Development, Comparative Systems, Econometrics, Mathematical Economics, Labor Economics, Monetary Systems, and Public Sector Economics. BS candidates also complete business electives, with options ranging from introductory classes in finance, management, marketing, and commercial law to focused concentrations in specific areas. This flexible structure allows students to tailor their academic journey to individual goals. Numerous graduates successfully transition to advanced studies, with recent examples including full-ride law school admissions, professional sports team internships, and municipal economist positions.
