Webster's composition program emphasizes modern concert music and songwriting while encouraging students to experiment with diverse musical genres and technologies, including jazz, electronic music, and computer/MIDI applications. Composition majors receive personalized guidance from faculty composers and enjoy multiple performance opportunities through ensembles like the Webster New Music Ensemble, Student Songwriter Showcase, and Wet Ink initiative. The curriculum combines core requirements, performance training, composition coursework, and specialized tracks. The songwriting concentration prepares aspiring singer-songwriters through intensive private lessons and classroom instruction, developing their abilities in composition, vocals, lyric writing, and instrumental accompaniment (typically piano or guitar). This program blends rigorous instrumental training with comprehensive studies in traditional, jazz, and commercial music theory and history. Graduates showcase their skills through a culminating concert of original works and a professionally produced CD. Webster's Bachelor of Music in Composition meets all accreditation standards set by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), of which Webster University is an accredited member.
