Archaeology is the anthropological discipline that examines past human cultures by analyzing physical artifacts. Wayne State's archaeology curriculum provides students with thorough training in both methodology and theory, along with exposure to current debates in the field. The program offers abundant practical research and fieldwork experiences both on campus and at external sites. Undergraduates can choose anthropology as their major with an archaeology concentration, or complement another major with an Archaeology Minor. For graduate studies, options include pursuing an M.A. or Ph.D. in Anthropology with archaeological specialization. Master's candidates can explore general archaeology or concentrate on specific areas like historical/public archaeology or museum studies. Doctoral candidates develop expertise in a particular archaeological field aligned with their academic interests and faculty research strengths. Those considering graduate studies should consult with the department's graduate director and archaeology faculty regarding the choice between M.A. and Ph.D. programs.
