The Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology & Immunology provides a doctoral program in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, combining academic study with hands-on research. Key research focuses encompass gene structure and function across microorganisms and complex organisms, energy conversion in cells, enzyme studies, protein architecture, biological data analysis, computational modeling, and pharmaceutical development using structural insights.

First-year Ph.D. candidates in the School of Medicine's Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences (IBS) program, which includes our department, complete a unified foundational curriculum. This program delivers comprehensive training in core biomedical research fields, with faculty from various departments leading interactive sessions focused on analyzing scientific literature. The fall term concentrates on Molecular and Cell Biology, while the winter term allows students to select two IBS elective courses alongside mandatory departmental classes: Protein Structure and Function (BMB 7320) and Molecular Biology (BMB 7330).
