Among the nation's longest-running jazz education programs, Wayne State University's Music Department provides both undergraduate and graduate degrees in jazz studies and performance. Focusing on creative elements like composition, arrangement, and improvisation, the WSU jazz curriculum immerses students in a dynamic learning environment within Detroit's vibrant Midtown Cultural Center. Auditioning students are immediately eligible for merit-based financial awards. The university has welcomed numerous jazz luminaries as guest artists, such as Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano, Chick Corea, John Clayton, Walter White, Jon Faddis, Elvin Jones, Steve Houghton, Dave Liebman, Kenny Werner, Fareed Haque, Marvin Stam, and Woody Shaw. Starting Fall 2017, thanks to special partnerships and philanthropic support, the department introduced the Gretchen Valade Graduate Assistantship in Jazz and an Endowed Chair in Jazz, while preparing for the forthcoming Gretchen Valade Jazz Center. These groundbreaking programs give WSU students and faculty exclusive connections to Detroit Jazz Festival performers, Mack Ave. Records artists, and the Gretchen Valade artistic legacy.
