The Cultural Studies and Social Thought in Education (CSSTE) doctoral program offers an adaptable, demanding curriculum centered on examining culture and power dynamics within educational settings, both past and present. This interdisciplinary approach encompasses diverse areas such as media studies, popular culture, equity issues, environmental concerns, moral philosophy, artistic expression, and intersections of identity including race, gender, and socioeconomic status. These perspectives inform various educational disciplines like literacy studies, administration, instructional leadership, curriculum development, postsecondary education, STEM fields, arts education, inclusive education, and language acquisition programs. Our faculty strives to cultivate a collaborative academic environment that bridges theory and practice. Beyond formal coursework, we emphasize close mentorship relationships to guide doctoral students through research processes, knowledge creation, publication strategies, and educational activism. Our fundamental belief is that academic inquiry should drive meaningful improvements in educational institutions and the broader communities they impact. Learning occurs not just in traditional classrooms but through all cultural experiences - from museums to household interactions to media consumption. Cultural studies approaches use these varied contexts as foundational elements for developing research inquiries and shaping pedagogical methods.
