The Department of Health and Exercise Science (HES) provides a two-year Master of Science degree program. With a research focus on identifying factors and developing strategies to prevent chronic illnesses and disabilities throughout life, the HES department structures its curriculum to equip students for roles as clinical exercise experts in preventive and rehabilitative programs, opportunities in clinical research initiatives, or advanced studies in graduate or allied health fields.
Our program features: (a) challenging academic courses taught by faculty who combine teaching with research, (b) hands-on internships within the department's chronic disease management program where classroom knowledge is put into practice, and (c) a mandatory thesis project completed under individual faculty guidance. HES faculty actively participate in joint research projects and funded studies alongside departments including Cardiology, Pulmonology, Public Health Sciences, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, and Neurology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, as well as the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences.
