Students majoring in Japanese Language & Culture acquire proficiency in both verbal and written Japanese while gaining insights into Japan's rich cultural and literary heritage spanning over 30 millennia.
The East Asian Languages and Cultures Department is dedicated to fostering expertise in Japanese and Chinese languages while promoting interdisciplinary, cross-cultural comprehension of East Asian societies. Through our comprehensive program encompassing language studies, literature, cinema, and cultural exploration, we enhance students' linguistic capabilities and critical thinking, broaden their cultural awareness of East Asian civilizations, and nurture their ability to thoughtfully engage with diverse perspectives. The department maintains that multilingual and multicultural fluency are essential for responsible global citizenship and building a more equitable, sustainable, and empathetic world.

Qualification Requirements

Certified transcripts are required from each secondary school, college or university attended. A record of at least four years of schooling is needed in order to evaluate the application. Detailed information concerning courses taken and grades received must be listed on these records. If necessary, transcripts should be translated into English with the originals sealed and attached.
All international students whose first language is not English are required to submit a TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score. We accept self-reported test scores.
Wake Forest does not require applicants to submit an SAT or ACT score in the admissions application. If submitting scores, please know that we accept self-reported scores.
